The Green Glass Sea

Read 5/4/07 Ages 9+ (one swear word) Eleven year old Dewey reads Boy Mechanic and builds radios. She's been staying with her grandmother, but after the grandmother has a stroke, she joins her scientist father at the "Hill" (Los Alamos, New Mexico) where he is involved in a top-secret project building a "gadget" that has the potential to end the war for good. When her father must go to Washington D.C. to work, she ends up staying at the home of Suze, a classmate known as the Truck for her bossy ways. Suze is NOT happy that she has to share a room with "Screwy Dewey", with her thick glasses and strange orthopedic shoe. Slowly, the two outcasts forge a friendship.
